I think this comes under the title "local colloquialism".

"sweating like a hen drawing rails" One of my parents used to say this when they were working hard or it was hot weather.

"like pulling hen's teeth"- when a task was difficult.

"you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear."

WOW! But you know what? Up here in the "Frozen great white North" crocus plants are up & I saw some spring bulbs peeking out of the earth in my Mom's garden. We've basically had a green winter, here. Some snow comes, but it's gone in a few days. Even the storm that was forecast for our area currently is MUCH less than expected so far. Maybe 1-2" on the ground now.
