    Default It's Squirrel Appreciation Day!

There really is a National Squirrel Appreciation Day every January 21st.

    01-18-2011

Below are 7 ways for your family to celebrate them on their day:

    1. Get in the Mood
    2. Feed Them, and They Will Come
    3. Get Your Revenge by Making Them Work for It
    4. Shoot ‘Em (cameras only)
    5. Give Thanks for Small Favors
    7. Don’t Confuse Your Holidays

Details on the above list at: http://www.nwf.org/News-and-Magazine...nuary_Edition|

Not a fan, after some got into my attic.

They also destroyed several birdfeeders. I'm with my aunt, it's a rat with a fluffy tail.

My cat loves to hunt them. He doesn't often catch one, but he loves the hunt.

Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.”

Exactly. I had the same thing happen in the last house. One morning I grabbed my Daisy 880 air rifle and "fixed" the problem. No more chewing up there I can tell you.

Something bit off the tops of some of the seedling trees we planted last year at this house. I'd bet they did it. The yard is 3x larger and more visible from all sides here so I'm not as easy to go out and take them down here as readily as I was over there though. But believe me I'd do it.

I guess, then, that it's no coincidence that this opinion piece appeared on the Fox News website this morning:

"Why I Eat Squirrel, Really" by chef and author Georgia Pellegrini

    http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2012/...ntcmp=features

I saw the title of this thread and immediately thought of the Weird Al song, "Weasel-Stomping Day!"

Seriously, I love to watch the squirrels in the pecan trees beside the playground at school. I encourage my Pre-K'ers to look for them especially in the Fall when the squirrels are harvesting nuts for winter. The kids are often fascinated by this close-up view of these wild critters as they (the squirrels, that is) leap from branch to branch and scurry through the high tops of the trees.

    Warrior, I'm with you.

A guy I know told me how to dress them out and cook them. Apparently a brine soak is required. I would absolutely eat one if I was hungry.

I have a slingshot if needed. I'm not a fan. It was horrible hearing that dreadful chewing in the attic, and knowing something was chewing on (wires maybe) and defecating in my attic. The little rats could have killed me and burned my house down. Gotten me sick.

I guess no one saw the squirrel episode of "Infested" - the son got very sick and nearly died. The house was destroyed.

Baby rats are "cute" too, but I don't want them in my yard or house, either.

Just because it's a mammal doesn't make it cute. A rodent is a rodent. My cat agrees, and runs them off all day.

Squirrels also dig up my garden.

We have mice in our garage/shop and I'm in the process of iradication. I may have to step up to trays of poison pellets. I was out there with the Daisy 880 and shot at one, but missed somehow. Nice thing about pneumatic air rifles is that you only have to pump as many times as you want. 3 to 10 is the recommended range. I had it on 3 or 4 in the garage. Pellets only. The all lead pellet spends its energy and deforms on impact compared to a steel BB that would smash stuff and bounce a lot more frequently. I put my trusty old Victor trap out there and the little vermin ate the peanut butter off of it and it didn't even go off! It did the last two times I used it. Well this time I got some new traps with smooth metal parts to slip past eachother. They also have longer trip plates so less leverage would be needed to trip them.

WarriorX, my DH used to hunt rats that lived in tunnels under his dad's hogpen. These weren't any ordinary rats -- they were the big South Georgia wharf rats. He'd lie in wait for them with his rifle many a day. When it got dark he'd pour some gasoline down the holes and light them and shoot the fireballs that ran out.

Sounds like you could use a good mouser or two. A couple of lean, slender cats with large ears, large eyes, long legs, and long tails should do the trick.

I'm not a big fan of squirrels either! Last summer a couple of squirrels chewed some holes in our soffit and made a nest. We could hear them running around the attic at times. My husband and I had to tear out a whole section of soffit to replace. It was such a pain.

Warrior, see if you can adopt a mouser alley cat from a bad part of town. They know what to do.

My Bubba cat came straight from Cracktown. He is a fantastic mouser.

We have red squirrels here that are pests because they like to chew on stuff... our stuff. So, if I can line the site up on one, I pull the trigger. I rarely have a 22 rifle in hand though when I see them around the house... and I only terminate the ones that live within 100 feet or so of the house, since the others aren't likely to do us any damage. In the last decade, I've only managed to take out 2 of the critters.

Maybe this should go in What's for Dinner, some of them sound good.

I'm sorry, I can't stand this any longer. I have to post this video. Just don't click on it if you don't like the idea of weasels (or squirrels) being stomped on. Still, it is a very catchy and festive tune . . . and it will become a brain worm.
