Democracy has never been a founding principle of America. I mean, it's even in the party name: "democrat"; that is to say, one who supports democracy.
People used to be well-aware of the evils of a democracy:
"Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself." — John Adams
"Between a balanced republic and a democracy, the difference is like that between order and chaos." — John Marshall
"Democracy was the right of the people to choose their own tyrant." — James Madison
"The experience of all former ages had shown that of all human governments, democracy was the most unstable, fluctuating and short-lived." — John Quincy Adams
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1
