Are coffee cups safe to buy at the dollar store? Is their a problem with lead content? What does a person need to watch for?

Most stuff from the Dollar Store comes from China.

China uses a lot of lead paint.

I would not buy a Dollar Store coffee cup - they are very cheap at Walmart and other big stores. There's no way to look at a cup and see if it's OK.

However, the big stores will not import "bad" cups due to product liability and fear of lawsuits. They do product testing and all.

I think this would be a case of "pinch the penny, lose the dollar".

Isaiah 6:8 I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: “ Whom shall I send, And who will go for Us?”

Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.”

My favorite mug, a "Texas Wildflowers" - with beautiful flowers all over, only cost me about $3 in the "tourist" section of my local Walmart.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has lots of information on avoiding lead paint.

    www.cpsc.gov

It also has lots of information about recalls and safety notices. We have it bookmarked in regards to children's products.

If you want a coffee cup that you plan to use every day, I recommend this web site: http://www.fiestafactorydirect.com/c...g.aspx?pid=209
Everything from this site is made in USA. We use the java mugs with large open handles in different colors.

One of the main problems with using anything that might have lead leakage, is that when the cup (or bowl, etc.) is hot with hot food/beverage inside, the lead leaches more readily than if it is used for something cold. So, for coffee/tea hot drinks, I wouldn't trust anything that isn't made here in USA.

In the OP, you asked what is there to watch out for? also the possibility of the glaze cracking over time, allowing the lead to leach out more easily. You can read about the dinnerware/cups at the above web site and the safety of them. I shopped for a long time before I found something I felt comfortable using every day with no lead concerns. They're more costly, but I cut back expenses on things that don't matter to me as much.

Try Ikea. I know the stuff is cheaper and they say they have a commitment to the environment and safe products.
