Thread: Obama makes election-year change in deportation policy

I've read in several places that this could also have been a trap for Romney to fall into, for him to make a knee-jerk reaction statement decrying the move or to come out supporting it. The former would get him in deep with Latinos and similar target audiences, and the latter would get him in trouble with Republicans and be a sign for the Dems to hold up against him. If this is the case, then Romney doesn't seem to be falling for it (yet), and he's playing his hand close to the vest. He's been pretty silent on the issue itself, but I would like to hear him say something about Obama's use of the E.O. and calling him to account for his previous statement that he couldn't just go over Congress' head and enact any law he wants. I think he could make that case without making it about the immigration issue, as Obama has used the E.O. for other things. It also seems to have taken the wind out of the sails of a similar act supported by Marco Rubio, whose name is being bandied about as a possible Romney running mate. Maybe I'm wrong about this, but given that Obama's had a bad few weeks lately, I'm beginning to think this is a desperation move that was meant to draw Romney into a trap where he would be on the record about immigration and amnesty one way or another.

And it's just overwhelmingly clear from the OT that God is very concerned about the fate of 'the alien'. Just a brief search through blueletterbible (a great, great site, btw), brings up more than ten verses in which our Lord strongly states 'the alien' is to be treated kindly, with food left for him, and never to be mistreated. Some verses: Lev.24.22, Zec 7:10, Num 15:15, Deu 24.14, Jer 7.6, Jer 22.3, Eze 22.7, Lev 19.33, Exd 22:21. Deu 10:19 actually demands "show your love for the alien". So I think this issue calls for a more measured response, or at least one that separates our human nature (understandable concern over economic and social issues) from our Holy Spirit nature, which calls for compassion or at least concern for 'the alien'.

btw, I do have an introduction over in "new members", posted last week when I joined ....
In the OT what did they do to the "alien" who climbed over the wall without paying taxes?

This is definitely going to be a year that define many events to come. Not forgetting also that this is the year 2012. Not that I belief that will be end of the world, according to some people's interpretation of the Mayan calendar, but just the mess with are in with all these politics going on and then some people's believes that this is the last year for this earth.
Thank you, God, for my salvation!

There is the problem with using a passage regarding Israel (A theocracy) with the US (Secular) or any other secular government. Now, before anyone think I am advocating for the mistreatment of anyone, take a breath and read on.

The reason they are here (in many cases) is that we have a social welfare system that is non existent where they come from.

They are given loopholes to exploit and are not made to assimilate.

They are all to often given opportunity after opportunity to use a system that cannot sustain the demand. I too live in Ca. and you know this better than most.

They are not required to live under the laws of the nation in which the alien, in fact their presence is the first step in that process.

The benefits in real dollars far outweigh any potential contribution they pay through taxes. (Schools, infrastructure, welfare, medical etc.)

Could the same be said of the people addressed in the passages you cited? Were the strangers allowed to violate God's law with impunity? Could a person be expected to live their lives in opposition to that law and then expect others to support the needs they could not cover for themselves?

We all know the answer to those questions, The laws aliens exploit, with the assistance of many in the political class, show a contempt for our laws and unapologetically so. Our POTUS is using this to pander to a constituency with hopes of parlaying it into votes, both now and later for his party.

On a side note, my wife works for the Los Angeles Superior Court and people don't want to know the crime rate of inner city immigrants. The violence, cost in dollars for incarceration and prosecution, degradation of neighborhoods etc. it is staggering. All major demographics of the social welfare class boast the same shameful record and society is to blame for what the blight of compassion with no accountability has wrought.

Israel in some ways did have a similar problem, ultimately, as aliens introduced foreign gods to Israel and the devil managed to get God's people to turn against Him and thus He removed His protection from them.

If we want to quote Scripture to make a point, let's look at all Scripture has to say on the matter. We can only draw broad parallels but we also need to be honest about the uniqueness of Israel.

    Pardon me, I missed it.
I was looking more for an actual conversion story, I suppose.
I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.
    For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor;
no good thing does He withhold from those whose walk is blameless.

Unfortunately. It fits in perfectly with Biblical prophecy.
