IE 8 and Windows XP

I am using Windows XP with service pack 3.
I had my brother put Internet Explorer 8 on a CD for me,
as I am on dial up and it would take forever and a day to
download it myself. The installation works fine, but...
when I sign on to my internet provider and IE starts to
load but then crashes. I have tried twice with the
same results both times. Is Internet Explorer 8 compatible with Windows XP? I have Chrome browser also, but need IE
because Chrome won't bring up the window I need when
I print out Paypal shipping labels for my customers.

I'm using XP SP-3 and while I prefer Firefox, I also have IE-8 installed. While IE is known to crash a lot, I've had no problems when I do use it.



* Are you possibly running what MS would consider a pirated copy of Windows XP?
(Due to a major crash years ago I paid big $$ for a reliable company to reinstall the OS for me. The company used their licensed, registered version of XP Pro for the reinstall which did not match up to my machine's registration info (XP Home) so MS assumed I was using stolen software and wouldn't update the machine. Eventually I had to order the original disks from HP, reinstall the entire thing from scratch and haven't had a problem with updates, etc. since.)

* If you are using the original XP that came with your machine, do you have the latest Windows Updates installed?

* Have you checked for a possible virus or malware infection?

* Does your computer have enough memory and/or hard drive space?

* Have you opened "Task Manager" to see if an outdated (or broken) application is hogging the CPU or has a high memory usage?

* Have you checked the Windows error reporting log (a.k.a. Watson) and 'googled' the error number associated with the crashes?

* It's highly possible there is a glitch on the IE-8 install CD. If so, you will have to uninstall it (via the control panel) then download IE8 directly from Microsoft here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl...ils.aspx?id=43

* The entire package is only 16.1 MB so it shouldn't take too, too long. But, if you're in a big hurry and you have a friend or family with DSL, unplug & drag drag your computer to their house and download everything you need via their connection.

IE 8 is compatible with Windows XP, however IE9 is not.

Macrohard and Amazing Grace. As far as I know my Windows XP is the real deal. It was pre-installed on
a computer I bought. Thanks for the suggestions and help, everyone! Tons of space and
cpu usage shows normal. Lots of memory too. No viruses, have the latest updates via Norton every day.
Thought I would wait a decent amount of time to give a chance to
respond. Will try the links and read the info you have provided.
