Pound of Flesh
In Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice, Shylock demands his "pound of flesh" for retribution / payment.
Has anyone noticed that nowadays, there seems to be a lack of grace in humanity. Real or imagined offense frequently demands that proverbial pound of flesh. No one seems satisfied short of revenge being exacted. Forgiveness seems to be in short supply within the offended's accounting ledger.
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. ~Ephesians 2:8-9
