Update as of March 28th, 2013

Office Of Conservation Raises Sinkhole Monitoring Alert Status To Code 2; Elevated Subsurface Activity Detected; Trees And Access Ramp Slough-in From The Oxy 3 Well Pad As The Sinkhole Expands!

The Office of Conservation, in consultation with Assumption Parish Incident Command, is advising the public that the Oxy 3/sinkhole monitoring alert status has been raised to Code 2 – requiring all work directly in and over the sinkhole to cease until further notice. Seismic monitoring has detected elevated subsurface activity in the area around the sinkhole and Oxy 3 area indicative of fluid and gas movement below the sinkhole, and a further slough-in was observed along the southeastern side of the sinkhole this morning, with the access ramp from the Oxy 3 well pad to the sinkhole having sloughed in, along with several trees on either side of the ramp. The seismic activity is limited to the Oxy 3/sinkhole area, showing no indication of impact to the Oxy 1 area. Monitoring is constantly ongoing in the area and Conservation will continue to advise the public of significant changes in subsurface conditions

    Louisiana Sinkhole Expands Again

About 25 trees fell into the Assumption Parish, La., sinkhole and officials say a new crack formed Monday night in a well pad south of the lake-like slurry hole. The Advocate reports experts working for the state Office of Conservation believe the collapse and cracked well pad are linked to now-calmed seismic events from late last week. Because of that connection, agency officials said the discovery did not halt work around the sinkhole and the area remains in emergency officials’ lowest “alert” status.

Parish officials also estimated that the edge collapse, or slough-in, probably bit off a quarter-acre from the formerly 13-acre sinkhole’s southeastern edge. The sinkhole is located in swamps between the Bayou Corne and Grand Bayou communities and has required the continued evacuation of more than 350 people in those areas. A failed Texas Brine Co. LLC cavern in the Napoleonville Dome is suspected of causing the sinkhole and related consequences. The cracked surface pad had been used for the original access well to the failed cavern, Oxy Geismar No. 3.

Early on Friday, experts detected an uptick in “very long period” tremors, a type of stretched-out seismic event, that have been linked to fluid and gas movement underground. The tremors were detected under the sinkhole and around the failed Texas Brine cavern. Past increases in tremors sometimes have preceded slough-ins and burps by the growing sinkhole. The edge collapse happened roughly opposite from a nearly 1-acre slough-in on the western edge of the sinkhole that followed other tremors earlier this month.

That earlier slough-in, combined with other measurement changes, had boosted the sinkhole’s area to 13 acres. The new crack is in an out-of-use ramp connecting the well pad to the sinkhole. The crack is parallel to the sinkhole’s southern edge

Pray Advise move out of the neighborhood!

So do you think 5 miles between you and this potentially catastrophic explosion is still enough, Shonsu?

More tremors, another edge collapse at sinkhole
    By david j. mitchell

    River Parishes bureau

The massive sinkhole in northern Assumption Parish had another burp and edge collapse Thursday morning after tremors had remained at an elevated frequency and halted work in and around it the past few days, parish officials said.

But parish officials said that by Thursday afternoon, the micro-earthquakes near the Bayou Corne and Grand Bayou communities known as sharp tremors had calmed down and precautions halting work were eased.

While there was no formal estimate of how much swampland collapsed Thursday, John Boudreaux, director of the parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, said the new collapse area is roughly 25 feet by 100 feet.

The formerly forested swatch is on the east side of the more than 13-acre, 160-foot deep sinkhole, north of a well pad being used for sinkhole access and seismic monitoring, he said.

Boudreaux said trees went into the sinkhole Thursday morning and he was able to see and record — from the well pad — one of the trees going “straight down” into the hole.

“It doesn’t fall. It sinks,” he said.

A few more trees toppled over later in the day, Boudreaux said.

Scientists believe the failure of a Texas Brine Co. salt dome cavern led to the formation of the sinkhole last year. About 350 residents have been evacuated more than eight months due to the sinkhole and oil and gas venting from deep sources unleashed by the cavern failure.

Boudreaux said earlier this week that an increase in micro-earthquakes from about 10 per day to 50 per day prompted a halt in work inside the sinkhole berm beginning Sunday. The micro-earthquakes indicate rocks breaking deep underground.

The berm contains 71 acres that includes the sinkhole and surrounding swamp.

By Thursday afternoon, once tremors subsided, work was only prohibited on the sinkhole surface, Boudreaux said.

He said that in addition to the tremors, slough-off and burp, water was moving in the sinkhole but that movement stopped later Thursday when tremors subsided.

In a presentation to an expert panel on the sinkhole earlier this month, CB&I hydrogeologist Gary Hecox described for scientists how water in and around the sinkhole moves during burps, “sloshing” with a tidal-like action.

“So essentially during one of these burp events, the water inside the berm is active,” Hecox said. “It moves back and forth, which requires a lot of energy to do that, and we think that’s why the bottom is constantly changing.”

Its funny, but my wife said almost exactly the same thing about me the other day...
The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.
Day to day pours forth speech, And night to night reveals knowledge.

400 ft. of protective berm sinks around giant Louisiana sinkhole

    BAYOU CORNE, LA (WAFB) -

There are more problems at the site of the giant sinkhole in southeast Louisiana.

Officials said between 400 and 500 feet of the berm on the south side of the sinkhole, which was set up to help keep possible contaminants from leaking into other parts of the swamp, has now sunk underwater.

They also say trees on the southwest side sinking. Some have sunk up to 10 feet.

Texas Brine, the company who owns the salt dome that caused the sinkhole, was required by the Louisiana Office of Conservation to build the berm to prevent the brine in the sinkhole from leaking into the surrounding waterways.

The berm area is about 82 acres surrounding the now 15-acre sinkhole. Seismic monitors were placed in and around the sinkhole area to monitor tremors. Tremors usually result in a "burp" that brings debris from the bottom of the sinkhole to the top. These burps have been known to swallow trees surrounding the sinkhole.

It's been almost a year since a massive sinkhole near Bayou Corne and Grand Bayou began causing problems. Bubbling in the bayou led to the sinkhole. About 350 people have been forced out of their homes since August.

It has been 10 months since hundreds living near the giant sinkhole were forced from their homes.

Bubbles were spotted in Bayou Corne and Grand Bayou in June 2012. Two months later, the ground opened up.

Most affected residents began receiving weekly checks from Texas-Brine in the amount of $875 per week.

Nine months after the sinkhole first appeared in Bayou Corne, Texas Brine began making offers to buy out the residents living there.

IMO the methane is a really scary issue with this ongoing crisis. Methane release is also a problem for melting arctic ice according to a documentary I watched on TV a few nights ago. Thanks for keeping us apprised Shonsu and RaptureHolic.

Texas Brine Says That Gas Has Been Found Under Homes Near Sinkhole, 100% Of Lower Explosive Limit, Hydrogen Sulfide Also Detected

June 14, 2013 - UNITED STATES - The following constitutes the latest update from the Assumption Parish Police Jury on the giant Louisiana sinkhole:

Presence of Gas Found During Under-slab Monitoring
Texas Brine has reported to us that two additional homes (that had not previously been monitored) have undergone under-slab monitoring and the presence of gas has been found – 100% LEL and traces of H2S.

Texas Brine will advise what additional steps will be taken to mitigate the presence of gas from the underneath of these slabs. No changes have been made to the evacuation order and we will update as information becomes available.
