I would say Cuddles, cause he's so cute, but that would be mean!

They're very sensitive about any kind of pressure. Any kind of squeeze will probably get a bite.

Even if it did bite, it hurts no more then an ant bite or a bee sting. Certainly not pleasant, but not the end of the world either. Otherwise, this particular kind (common jumping spider) can be handled without worry. It's not poisonous.

No squeezing and you'll be fine. Just be calm and don't freak out if it jumps, because it will, and unless you want it on your face, don't move in too close for a better look at those beautiful gem like eyes. Leave that to the zoom lens.

In the world to come, when our Lord Jesus Christ establishes His Kingdom, creatures that are predatory and dangerous, things that bite and sting today won't bring us to any harm or danger then.

We'll be in perfect peace with them and they with us.

In the mean time, it's good to have a healthy fear of the dangerous ones. No one can honestly fault you if you're intimidated by the critters in general, poisonous or otherwise.

    I won't anyway.

Why do I have the feeling that you actually have one of these as a pet?

A family friend from a time ago had a pink toe tarantula. It was very big, docile, slow, and even liked people. I handled it a few times and I thought it was the coolest thing ever as a young boy.

Even then though, I knew he was just a really lucky guy. Their temperaments vary wildly.

I've later tried some from a pet shop and that thing just did not like me at all. Little prickly hairs everywhere, an unnatural desire to get on my face, bitey... I swear it wanted to get in my mouth!

To be fair, none of the others were as awful as that one.

But it did prove my thinking true. None was as cool as that first one I got to handle. This was many years ago and that friend has since moved away.

Crazy tarantulas are one thing. Common jumping spiders are nothing by comparison. You can't really keep one of those as pets.

I've never actually encountered these cute larger fuzzy ones in my part of Texas, but I have encountered plenty of common grass spiders which I assume are related.

I trap and release them if I can. But if they're funny colored/looking or decidedly not jumpy, I'm just as liable to swat em'. I'm not a professional at IDing them.

The exception, being this awesomely huge tropical orb weaver I found a few months ago! I released it in a tree outback in the garden.

In the evenings I often find her gliding about the trees. She makes her web in the evenings and seems to go everywhere on a highway of strings (it would literally look like she was gliding!), and she closes shop at dawn.

In the day she hides under a bigger leaf in the back. Though, I haven't seen her in a while.

If you're interested, I might see if I still have some pictures I got of her.

I used to work with a guy who had tarantulas for pets. He showed me a photo of him with a whole bunch of tarantulas crawling on him. Yuck! Must be a guy thing.

Portia spiders (small version - jumpers) are very interesting preditors. Nation Geo had quite an article on them.

One was force off a branch by a competitor, so it went above and decended by silk and attacked from above - successfully.

The scientist was totally blown away....

I could not stop thinking - fearfully and wonderfully made. HIS creative hand is so obvious.

We have the small (up to 1 inch) black fuzzy ones. We call them Irving.
