Thread: Communion at every meal?

    Default Communion at every meal?

I'm posting this here because I'm not sure where else it should go. If there is a better place for it to be, can someone please move it there?

Jesus and his disciples were eating a meal when he told them, "This do...". My question is this: Since we all, as human beings, have to eat on a regular basis, was He telling us to remember Him at each of those meals and remember his sacrifice with each bite and sip? To me that makes perfect sense. Others seem to think that it should only be done on a schedule in church.

Help me out, please. As it stands, I personally choose to remember his sacrifice each time I eat or drink, and that includes each swallow of the coffee I drink all day.

I'm really tired as I sit here and type this, so if it doesn't make sense, let me know and I'll try to explain better what I'm asking.

    Thanks!

    Well, it's your faith.

One time I took communion and got hives from the bread. It was pretty funny, like something out of a bad horror movie. I got hives all over my legs and kept itching.

Suffice to say, I have to be careful with gluten. Whatever we use at my new church works fine.

Isaiah 6:8 I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: “ Whom shall I send, And who will go for Us?”

Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.”

I have also wondered this same thing. His sacrifice seems so huge, and it seems a shame to put it on a schedule. Or to make it so much of just a ritual, as some churches do. I think Jesus also said something about doing this when you gather together, which would mean it could be appropriate to include it with meals, snacks, or Bible studies or prayer meetings.

I know what you mean about remembering Him while you eat/drink. There are meals when we've already prayed the blessing, and I am starting to eat, and feel that I need to thank Him again, like there's more that's missing. I don't understand why.

Communion is an act of rememberence.

Applying that to normal 'refueling' diminishes its significance, IMO.

Also, there is Scripture about not taking communion in an 'unworthy manner' (I Cor 11). One of those unworthy criteria is because you are physically hungry.

Interesting thought, Hootmon. Why is being physically hungry being unworthy? Can you explain that so I can understand please? Knowing about this is really important to me.

And Acts 5:41, it's Heather, right? As in Heather and Ron? Long time no see! I remember when Ron had his accident. I hope I've got the right person.

It distracts from the solemnity of the 'rememberence'.

23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

27 Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. 28 But a man must examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly. 30 For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number [s] sleep. 31 But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with the world.

33 So then, my brethren, when you come together to eat, wait for one another. 34 If anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, so that you will not come together for judgment. The remaining matters I will arrange when I come.

Thank you, Hootmon. Sorry it took me a while to get back here. It's been one of those weeks.
