Default Russian attack submarines keep trying to sneak up on U.S. to no avail

    August 14, 2012 5:00 am

A Russian nuclear-powered attack submarine armed with long-range cruise missiles operated undetected in the Gulf of Mexico for several weeks and its travel in strategic U.S. waters was only confirmed after it left the region, the Washington Free Beacon has learned.

It is only the second time since 2009 that a Russian attack submarine has patrolled so close to U.S. shores.

The stealth underwater incursion in the Gulf took place at the same time Russian strategic bombers made incursions into restricted U.S. airspace near Alaska and California in June and July, and highlights a growing military assertiveness by Moscow.

    HOWEVER,
The Washington Free Beacon, citing unnamed sources, said the voyage was only the second time since 2009 that a Russian attack sub has ventured so close to U.S. shores.

No other news outlets reporting it.

Take with a grain of salt....for now.

Obviously the USN wasn't looking for it. We are not at war, and international waters are..... international.

Now if that puppy was within range of a task force..... some ASW captains have some 'splainin to do.

PS. We have subs that shadow just such adventurers. Leaks in a sub are often fatal so I would not expect to hear anything from the Silent Service.

I would expect this type of thing to happen more often--we have subs lounging around near the Baltic and underneath the polar ice cap (Arctic). I'm just surprised that it supposedly went undetected....

Default This is my area of Expertise...

I spent almost 20 years on nuclear subs and I was part of the commissioning crew on the USS Dallas SSN 700.
    And your article stated:
A Russian nuclear-powered attack submarine armed with long-range cruise missiles operated undetected in the Gulf of Mexico for several weeks and its travel in strategic U.S. waters was only confirmed after it left the region, the Washington Free Beacon has learned.

It is only the second time since 2009 that a Russian attack submarine has patrolled so close to U.S. shores.

It was only confirmed after it left to protect the security of our ships.

There is no doubt in my mind we knew it was there from start to finish.

    And heres to you seank6:

You guys really make them ruskies mad when you know where they are at and you start dropping them sonabuoys!

Thanks for serving Brother Sean and God Bless You!

I also served aboard a nuclear fast attack sub and I concur with the others. There is no way they came in unnoticed.

Apostasy A Russian attack sub is discovered just 200 miles off Florida's East Coast

U.S. defense officials are downplaying the potential threat of a Russian attack sub detected just 200 miles from the East Coast and given safe harbor in Florida during Hurricane Sandy.

The Russian Seirra-2 class submarine was believed to be part of the country's Northern Fleet, outfitted with SS-N-21 anti-submarine warfare missiles, SS-N-16 anti-submarine warfare missiles, and torpedos.

This is the first time a Russian Seirra-2 class sub has detected near a U.S. coast, reported the Free Beacon.
There are two guided missile submarines and six nuclear missile submarines docked at Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base.

Those American vessels are a known target of Russian attack subs.

O must think he has the election well in hand - he's already started being "more flexible after the election".

Mr. President, you have no one on this site fooled. But do us a favor and make up something more creative than "safe harbor from a hurricane" for a sub that is impacted by neither wind, rain, nor waves.

No, this is current. I know there was a similar incident earlier in the year, but this sighting is new.

I thought the same thing, thinking this was the incident in the Gulf of Mexico, but this is actually a new one off the east coast of Florida.

That would make it the second Russian attack sub being reported in our waters this year, not the first. It's nice that we can be friendly about it, I'm not for starting a war, but Russia is once again the aggressor here.

Why is a Russian attack sub in our waters? Would Russia treat an American attack sub as we have treated theirs? Not saying we're there or anything, but, just hypothetically speaking...

We are in their waters all the time.

Folks, I don't know why this article made news but Russia and the US are in each others waters all the time.

In the 70's and 80's it was not uncommon to see two or three trawlers (spy) inside 25 miles of shore.

Trust me, if Defcon was to go up, we have ways to move them out or sink them.
