    Saint Patrick, children and the Trinity

    Want to teach children about the Trinity? Saint Patrick’s story may help.

    Born in Scotland, Saint Patrick (c. 387-?) was captured by pirates when he was 16 and sold as a slave to a chief in Ireland. He eventually became a priest in Rome, then served God in England. Later the Pope made him a bishop and sent him to Ireland as a missionary.

    It is said that Patrick used the three-leaf clover to help explain the Trinity: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Holding the shamrock he supposedly said, “Even as there are three leaves on this one stem, so there are three persons in one God.”1

    In addition to the shamrock, you might use candles as in the quote below. You might also tell them to think about some of the many different “identities” humans have. For instance, a man is somebody’s son. He may also be a father, a husband, a brother, a college graduate, a building inspector, a voter, a Sunday school teacher, an artist and many more things. Once they consider how easy it is for humans to be several things at once, it may be easier to grasp how our almighty God can be three persons in one.

    By the way, Saint Patrick is said to have converted over 100,000 people, built hundreds of churches and worked to end slavery.2 The shamrock is now regarded as the national emblem of Ireland.

    1 Cor 2:14 The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.

    God's gifts

    -I used to think that God's gifts were on shelves one above the other and that the taller we grow in Christian character the more easily we could reach them. I now find that God's gifts are on shelves one beneath the other and that it is not a question of growing taller but of stooping lower. F.B. MEYER

    We are ALL sinners
    Rom 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no not one:
    Rom 3:23-24 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.
    Eph 2:3-5 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.
    Titus 3:3-5 At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,

    Salvation and heaven is a free gift from God through mercy, grace and faith (not for what we do)
    Rom 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
    Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
    Eph 2:6-9 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.
    Rev 22:17 The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life.

    The gift is available to ALL/EVERYONE/WHOEVER will call on the Lord in faith
    Rom 10:9 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
    John 1:12-13 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God--children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
    Rom 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
    John 3:16-17 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”

    The Lord wants ALL to repent and be saved
    Matt 9:12-13 On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
    Ezek 18:32 “For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent and live!”
    2 Pet 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
    1 Tim 2:3-4 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
    Luke 15:7 I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.

    When we confess, the Lord will abundantly pardon us
    Is 55:7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
    1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
    Ps 103:8-12 The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
    Is 1:18 “Come now, let us reason together,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.”
    Ezek 33:14-16 “And if I say to the wicked man, ‘You will surely die,’ but he then turns away from his sin and does what is just and right--if he gives back what he took in pledge for a loan, returns what he has stolen, follows the decrees that give life, and does no evil, he will surely live; he will not die. None of the sins he has committed will be remembered against him. He has done what is just and right; he will surely live.”
    Is 43:25 “I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more.”

    Believers are new creations, forgiven and without condemnation
    Col 1:12-14 and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. 13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
    2 Cor 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!
    Rom 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
    Eph 3:16-19 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
