I see mushrooms every so often if I take a walk in the woods, but isn't it still too early for them to start growing?

As a kid, I think my siblings and I enjoyed the morel hunt more than the feast. I read an article two weeks ago that talked about the bumper crop of morels out this year.

What's so great about morels? I see they are mushrooms. Is it because they are rare? Are they tasty? What's the big deal?
