salads are always a hit
you can do broccoli salad (broccoli, green onions, bacon, grapes, walnuts, raisins, mayo, sugar, milk (for the dressing)). I may have the exact recipe around if you want, but i am sure you can google it up.
tex mex salad, layered salad, pasta salad...
finger foods, mini quiches, cheese, crackers, etc, fruit and veggie platters, spinach dip in a bread bowl usually goes quickly.
cupcakes or themed cake is always cute. or cookies decorated for the occasion.
lasagna or baked ziti, ham, etc.
i am making myself hungry!
Make sure that if its going to be outside in the heat that you have ample cold storage for the salads or perishables.
Or you can go totally themed with a tex-mex thing, western theme, eastern (mini eggrolls and stuff like that) theme, etc.
I like variety, so i like the salads. some of them are a meal unto themselves!
or you can do a bbq (more work on site than salads and stuff PRE prepared).
or catered (expensive)
man.
i am really really hungry now!
good luck throwing your shower!
(I would also suggest some nice big tents for shade!--isn't it HOT in Fla in august? eek! maybe some misters, too!)
I'm not hosting the shower in Florida. I couldn't even imagine having an out doors shower in August we'd melt! The shower is in northern Ohio, about 30 min West of Cleveland. It should be really nice in late August there. I was thinking about 11am to 1pm for the time and we are renting a big tent. I'm guessing there will be between 30 and 40 people so I know I'm not doing a sit down meal! Salads do sound good. Right now I am thinking 7 layer salad, chicken salad on cresset rolls, a fruit salad in a watermelon cut out like a baby bassinet and a cream cheese dip with veggies and crackers. Here’s the funny part, my husband is a Chef and is catering this thing, he is just so busy that I don't have time to talk to him about it! So I'm doing the next best thing and asking you guys
I don't want to add a bunch of added stress to him so I want to just give him a menu and not have to have him put one together.
My next question is about the theme...she wants monkeys! MONKEYS! Any thoughts out there ladies? I know the actual cake is going to be a 2 tier cake with a monkey sitting on top of it or a 3 tier cake with a monkey hanging on the side of it. My husband makes beautiful cakes so I’m not stressing over the design of it. He is also making little baby block cakes with numbers and letters on them.
It is the center pieces that I am having a hard time with and she isn't finding out what the baby is so I can't do anything gender specific. And I was going to embroidery name badges with monkeys at the corners because I will not know but 5 people there and I’d like to be able to call the other guest by name. Oh and the go home gift is going to be a small jar of jam with a personalized label that says Mary Ann’s Baby Shower (not her real name) Sound good so far?
Well, then, you definitely need something with bananas....maybe a fruit salad?
If you need favors, how about these monkey key rings: http://www.orientaltrading.com/appli...KEY+KEY+CHAINS For a centerpiece, how about a baby bathtub overflowing with stuffed monkeys? http://www.orientaltrading.com/appli...NKEY+BEAN+BAGS Or a monkey mini diaper cake http://www.specialdeliverybabyshower....asp?itemid=70
And especially not anything that will make the pregnant mom get sick. I know when I was pregnant I couldn't handle any dairy products and when my son was born I knew why - he was lactose intolerant, so perhaps you should consider this and bring on some of the cravings of the pregnant mom as well. Finger food is always good and easy like mini pastries, sandwiches, mini spring rolls - that sort of thing.
oh, glad to hear its not in fla. i assumed it was bc of your location!
i like the stuffed monkey idea, very cute.
how cool your hubby is a chef. lucky you!
the cake sounds great, so do the little baby blocks!
Chocolate fondue with lots of fun things to dip.
only if there is a top....goodness knows what'll fly in that melted chocolate outside.
then again, chocolate covered ants and grasshoppers used to be all the rage.
eeeeew
Shrimp and crab pasta salad.
Have your local grocery store steam you some shrimp with either Old Bay or Cajun seasoning. About two pounds.
Same thing for your snow crab legs. About two pounds.
Chill them.
Cook one box of Barilla penne pasta and cool in colander (use olive oil when cooking so it doesn't stick too much when cooled)
peel shrimp and chop
peel crab and shred
Chop finely one bunch of green onions
Chop three big stalks celery fine
Chop one red large bell pepper fine
Chop one green bell pepper fine
Chop one yellow bell pepper fine
Frozen sweet peas thawed under cool water in colander and drained.
Mix all together.
Then according to your taste to make the remoulade:
Grey Poupon mustard
Hellman's Light mayo
Cajun Spices
Garlic powder
Mix the three together until you get your desired taste. Then mix with everything and chill for several hours and stir before serving. It's very yummy. Goes good on a salad too. Goes good in small Pita sandwiches. And is just good by itself.
I make this and we have it for dinner for several days and sometimes lunch too.

ok why did crab star out? maybe it was mistyped? or is that a bad word, too? :confused
people gotta stop mistyping my name, then.
LOL
Pickles 'n' Ice cream
On a small oval cracker platter, scoop out three large servings of different cream cheese based dips. Use your faves or use your imagination - nuts, shredded cheeses, raisins, dried cherries, olives, chickpeas, green onion, dried beef, clams, horseradish. Top these scoops with three different, complementary (this is important - I learned the heard way), colorful sauces. Aim for a red, a yellow or orange and a brown - you're going for the look of an ice cream sundae. Thai chili sauce, Pickapeppa sauce, and duck sauce or Asian hot mustard sauce, for instance. Garnish with two dill pickle spears, one each lengthwise down the outer sides of the platter. Serve with crackers and raw veggies.
It's best served at room temp, so I'm thinking it will hold up well if you keep fridged until just before service. On second thought, nix the clams. They don't hold up so well outdoors in August, I'm guessing.
; )
Great idea! Monkeys are *huge* these days. Sock monkeys especially. Probably a boomer thing. Here is a link to some cute animal rubber stamps - including two adorable monkey babes. Perhaps you could use them for the name badges? Ooooo, a monkey-themed shower! How sweet is that?

and oh oooooh! along with the jam jars, you could send everyone home with a recipe for monkey bread, written on personalized cards made with the monkey stamp !!! somebody stop me, i'm outta control !!!
watermelons...Good for pregnancy on a hot day.
