And Don't put it in the same part of your purse with anything else.

Nothing like yelling freeze with car keys dangling in front of the muzzle

As for restrictions, do not take it into schools, hosptials, and the like.

Never take it onto FEDERAL property, like post offices.

DO NOT check it in at the Court House. Even the police are not allowed to carry in my county.

Again every state is different so learn your local laws and the laws of neighboring states if you head there.

I suggest you try the library for a book on gun safety. Check out local gun clubs - gunshops. I saw several ads for handgun training in SC while on vacation. I'm starting to see them in PA too. You may have such corses where you live. You can always contact the NRA who has excellent training material.

If you can afford two pistols, I recommend getting a .22 (long rifle) to practice. A Ruger Mark II (or Mark III) even used, is a nice pistol. Low cost practice. If you prefer a wheel gun (revolver) a Rossi, or similar double action (Fires by cocking hammer or pulling trigger to cock hammer) is your best choice. Although a little more expensive, I chose a .22 WMR aka .22 mag revolver which at short range compares to some larger centerfire cartridges.
(A full metal jacketed .22 mag went clean through 10 inches of phone books, a hollow point made an impresive cavity)

Snub nose (short barreled) pistols have very poor accuracy. 4 inch should be a minimum. The idea here is to learn how and to shoot accurately. This will help you improve shooting larger calibres.
I swear I read that as corpses!

How about I just bring you and my checkbook with me and just buy what you say?!?

I saw a Derringer once but it was so small I figured by the time I could get close enough to do any damage I might as well take my shoe off and beat them to death with it!

Sorry about the spelling and TMI.

As for the Birmingham Blues, That's a long drive for me. I'm sure you'll do fine.
Just take your time and learn first.

I shot a .44 mag derringer (only 2 shots) but that thing would knock the assailant over the car and then some. (in one state they will charge you with manslaughter if you use a .44 mag because it is so powerful you must have intended to kill the person.)

I hope I'm being helpful. Please be safe.
I've known too many people hurt simply because of ignorance and lax safety.

Amber how about a Super-Soaker water gun!

Fill it with perfume, or sticky soda! That'll scare them off.

    Amber,

Go here for the best information for your concerns: http://www.corneredcat.com/

You will likely want a .38 revolver. You just point and shoot and don't need to worry if it's loaded--it's always loaded. You likely have no need for a high capacity magazine (semi-auto), and any incident will occur within 10 feet most likely. 6-7 rounds in an accurate revolver is plenty.

S&W or Taurus--and if it's in your budget, get laser grips. Should put you about $650-800.

Sounds good and I thank you. I pray that I never have to use it, but I am willing to do so if need be. I also know that if I take it out I need to be ready to use it and not just wave it around th threaten someone. Chances are, the places I go, they have one as well.

That's an important thing you'll learn in the conceal carry course. Without imminent threat, waving it around could nail you with a felony. Definitely take a self-defense course, gun safety, and the CCW course. Best of luck!

My personal choice is a M-4/CAR-15.
40 rounds of FMJ in the clip.
    Night scope.
    Body armor.

Why waltz, when you can Rock N' Roll!

Ok, that was an old Soldier of Fortune t-shirt.

Of course you loose the concealment advantage, but then, people don't mess with porcupines.

I like the addage, if it's that dangerous to go there, don't go there.

Just inherited a never-before-fired MAK-90 and thankfully some ammo to boot. 7.62x39 ain't easy to find these days!
