Dana Longcope, a solar physicist at MSU, said the sun usually operates on an 11-year cycle with maximum activity occurring in the middle of the cycle. Minimum activity generally occurs as the cycles change. Solar activity refers to phenomena like sunspots, solar flares and solar eruptions. Together, they create the weather than can disrupt satellites in space and technology on earth.

The last cycle reached its peak in 2001 and is believed to be just ending now, Longcope said. The next cycle is just beginning and is expected to reach its peak sometime around 2012. Today's sun, however, is as inactive as it was two years ago, and scientists aren't sure why.

"It's a dead face," Tsuneta said of the sun's appearance.

Sun-like Star Flips Its Magnetic Field Like Our Sun: First Observation
ScienceDaily (Feb. 26, 2008) — An international group of astronomers that includes the University of Hawaii's Evgenya Shkolnik have discovered that the sun-like star tau Bootis flipped its magnetic field from north to south sometime during the last year.
It has been known for many years that the Sun's magnetic field changes its direction every 11 years, but this is the first time that such a change has been observed in another star.

The magnetic cycle of the Sun impacts the Earth's climate and is believed to have caused the little ice age in the seventeen century. The Earth's magnetic field also flips, although much less frequently and more erratically.

I have a set of filters which make it possible to look at sunspots safely. I used to use them all the time when I was a teacher, and in 2001 I was out there with the kids daily, looking at all the sunspots because there were so many. It was truly amazing!

Maybe it's quiet now because there were so many more than normal then? Just an idea.

I am also a scientist and a christian and i'm ashamed and appalled of the way people here tend to generalize scientists to be automatically atheists and make derogatory and snide remarks about them.

On-topic: The sun is a mystery, there are so many things that leading solar scientists just can't explain.
I do too believe that God has His hands in the solar phenomenon or that He somehow started the sun in such a way that it does whjat it does now according to His plan.

You know, we all have a certain level of pride when it comes to what we do...we tend to take offense at odd times and even when things are not directed at us personally.

I must agree with you that the scientists to which we are directly referring are not considering the Lord...they are, in fact, acting foolishly (even, dare I say, "dumb"). When God is not pointed to for the answer, the answer is no answer at all.

Hmmm...I must admit that I do that as well...at the end of the day we need to all do what you stated: Raise our hands and declare, "It is God!"

I would love to see the look on the scientist face when the sun goes dark like the book of revelations says it will. How they will try and explain how the sun blew up or just went dark and how we survived it. However thankfully I will be in heaven then

I completely agree. Many of you need to be more mindful of your words. I have more to say on the matter but unlike others, I refuse to hurt anyone's feelings.
