A real easy way is get yourself some Sweet Baby Rays bbq sauce at the grocers, add some tomato puree and water to get the consistency you want and then you could add in your maple syrup (I like honey) to taste and maybe some liquid smoke. I would add some hot sauce too but you wouldn't have to. That Rays is some good base for different variations of bbq sauce!
Just remember high sugar content in these kinds of sauces will burn on the bbq so shouldn't be added til close to the end of cooking rather than using for marinade before cooking. If you want to marinate I would recommend a rub.
Mmmmm bbq- I made 40# of bbq meatballs for a wedding reception I catered last Sat and they went crazy for them! Literally had a dozen people poking heads in kitchen wanting more! Loads of compliments. I used bacon (with grease) onion, fresh garlic - cooled and added brown sugar as a base for that sauce! Then made somewhat like I said on the Baby Rays but thinner.
You can google bbq sauces too. Good luck!
