Default The Battle of Gog and Magog

According to revelation 20.... the gog-magog battle occurs after the rapture, after the tribulation and after our 1000 year reign with Christ on earth. How then is gog-magog revelent to anything in present tense if it is at a minimum 1007 years from now...?

Can someone please help me tie all this together in a timeline with scripture references.

    Thanx.

    Revelation 20
    The Thousand Years
1And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key to the Abyss and holding in his hand a great chain. 2He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. 3He threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended. After that, he must be set free for a short time.
4I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony for Jesus and because of the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or his image and had not received his mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years. 5(The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.) This is the first resurrection. 6Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years.

    Satan's Doom
7When the thousand years are over, Satan will be released from his prison 8and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth—Gog and Magog—to gather them for battle. In number they are like the sand on the seashore. 9They marched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of God's people, the city he loves. But fire came down from heaven and devoured them. 10And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

It's generally agreed on that the Gog Magog of Ezekiel and the Gog Magog of Revelation are two different battles.

Some will use that to advocate a post-trib position while others will tell you that there are two Gog/Magog wars. Jack Kelley's site has a plethera of information on this and other subjects. Here's a link to an overview of Ezekiel 38-39.

The "last days"....is wide open to interpretation.Where do we find specific scripture references that separate or tie the two references of these events?

And so is Gog and Magog.

And in Ezekiel 38 it says Gog will go to a land that has recovered from war. If it was at the end of the millennium where there will be no war then that would be a land that has been recovering from war for a thousand years. That doesn't sound right does it? And in Ezekiel 37 you have the dry bones and Israel becoming a nation again and in Ezekiel 38 and 39 you have the Gog Magog war and then in Ezekiel 40 you have the millennium temple.

Here's another great Jack Kelley article that explains Rev. 20-22. Jack shows how Rev. 20 v.1-6 take place during the millenial reign/Kingdom Age. Rev. 21 & 22 come next, in sequence of actual events. Then Rev. 20 v. 7-15 finish off what happens at the end of the millenial reign/Kingdom Age (just prior to eternity.) So, there is a thousand year gap between Rev. 20 v.6 and Rev. 20 v.7. Which would mean that obviously, according to v.6 the holy who are priests of God and Christ, that reign with him for a thousand years, (WE who are raptured,) are in this millenial/Kingdom Age. As are tribulation survivors and saved Jews, who are re-populating the earth while satan is bound. Then v.7 = 1000 years later when satan is unbound and again deceives the nations. So the Gog and Magog mentioned here HAS to be a separate battle from Eze.38. It's a battle that happens after the 1000 yr. reign, but just prior to eternity.

    Default trying to understand.....

    Rev. 20:7-8

7And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison

8And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog, and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.

Refers to all of the earth at this time.....not just to the land of Magog to the north ....and coming against the encampment of the saints at the end of the millenium.....this is very interesting and confusing at the same time.

    Searching for an answer.....

We are told in Zechariah 12-14 that when Jesus returns, he will restore the kingdom to Israel. In Ezekiel 38-39 we are told that the restoration of Israel will take place AFTER the Gog of Magog war. In Revelation 20, Jesus has already returned and reigned (in Jerusalem) for 1000 years before that war with Gog. I see no reason for Jesus to wait 1000 years before notifying the so called lost Ten tribes of Israel (though God never lost them) that they belong to Israel. Because the two prophecies do not line up chronologically with eachother, then we can only conclude that they are seperate events.

Ez 38 battle is different than that of Rev 20.

Ez 38 is not a battle that includes ALL nations.. only specific ones.
It also (in Chapt 39) results in burning of weapons for 7 yrs and also burying the dead..

Armegeddon (Rev) battle is THE FINAL battle.. done over

    Introduction

    Outline of Ezekiel

    Ezekiel 1-24 Judgment on Judah

25-32 Judgment on Judah's Near Enemies

    33-48 Blessings on Israel

Chs. 38-39 are divided into seven sections each beginning with the

ominous words "Thus says the Lord God" (Adoriat Yahweh)

    (38:3,10,14,17; 39:1,17,25)

A helpful teaching outline is the journalist's questions Who, What, When, Where, How and Why. The focus of this study is the "When question."

There are six main views on the timing of this invasion among conservative, premillennial scholars: 1) before the tribulation; 2) near the beginning of the tribulation; 3) sometime just before the middle of the tribulation; 4) at the end of the tribulation; 5) during the "transition period" between the end of the tribulation and the actual establishment of the millennial kingdom; and 6) at the end of the millennium.

    I. The General Identification of the Time

    A. The Placement of Chapters 38-39 in Ezekiel

    B. The Chronological Terms

    1. "latter years" ('acharith hashshantm 38:8)

    2. "last days" ('acharith hayyamim 38:16)

    The words 'acharith hayyamtm are used fourteen times in the OT: Gen 49:1; Num 24:14; Deut 4:30; 31:29; Isa 2:2; Jer 23:20; 30:24; 48:47; Ezek 38:16; Dan 2:28; 8:23; 10:14; Hos 3:5; Mic 4:1.

While one could make a case for all of these occurrences referring ultimately to either the tribulation or the millennium, in several passages this term is clearly a technical term which refers to the consummation of history or what Scripture calls the 70th week. (Ezekiel 38:8,16; Dan 2:28; 10:14). Horst Seabass, Theological Dictionary of the Old Testament, 1:210-12.

    C. Conclusion

The placement of chapters 38-39 in Ezekiel and the chronological terms used eliminate two of the above views as viable alternatives: 1) before the tribulation; 2) at the end of the millennium.

The "transition period" view can also be eliminated because it is inconceivable that Israel could be fully restored to the land, wealthy, living securely and that this vast horde of nations could assemble their massive army and invade Israel all in a period of 75 days.

II. The Specific Identification of the Time

The Regathering of Israel (Ezek 36-37)

The Rest of Israel (38:8,11,14; cf. Dan 9:27)

    The Response of Israel (39:22)

    The Retribution of God (39:7)

The Return to Ancient Weapons (39:7)

The Relationship of Ezekiel 38-39 and Daniel 11:40-45

    the same time period

    a. Dan 10:14

    b. Ezek 38:8,16

    c. Dan 11:40-12:1

The events in Daniel 11:40-45a seem to occur just before and at the mid-point of the 70th week. Several points support this conclusion. First, as a result of the destruction of the king of the South and king of the North, the willful king invades Israel. This Is consistent with Daniel 9:27. Second, the willful king begins his persecution of Israel at this point. Third, the entire context of vv.40-45 pictures the ascension of the willful king to power which the Scriptures reveal will begin at the middle of the tribulation (Rev 13:4-5). Fourth, at this point the willful king establishes his headquarters in Jerusalem and desecrates the temple (1 1:45a; 9:27) Fourth, the great tribulation is clearly mentioned in the following context in 12:1.

    2. the same geographical areas

    a. a northern confederation of nations

Ezek 38:1-6 Magog, Rosh, Meshech, Tubal,

    Persia, Gomer, Togarmah

Dan 11:40-45 the king of the North

    (the Seleucid empire in

    Dan 11:5-35)

    b. a southern confederation of nations

    Ezek 38:5 Cush, Put

Dan 11:40-45 the king of the South (the

    Ptolemaic empire in Dan 11:5-35)

    Dan. 11:43 specifically mentions

    Libya and Cush.

    c. Israel

    3. Daniel and Ezekiel were contemporaries

I would have to disagree with this. Revelation is to be taken literally.

Now, Gog means ruler or leader and Magog (from what I understand) is an area of land in eastern Russia, so perhaps at the end of the Kingdom Age millenium, there will be another horrible ruler/leader from that same area? I'm just speculating because we're not told for sure.

The Battle of Ezekiel 38-39 ... Part 1
    Ikvot ha'Mashiach

A Bible Study by Jack Kelley

In this update of our study on the coming battle of Ezekiel 38-39 we'll review the 2600 year old prophecy in light of recent world events.

    What Time Is It?
First of all, lets' get some kind of time frame started. Falling between Israel's modern re-birth, prophesied in Ezekiel 36-37, and the Millennium to which Ezekiel devotes chapters 40-48, means that the battle of chapters 38-39 has to take place after 1948 but before the 2nd coming, and all agree it hasn't happened yet. This has led some to see the passage as a description of Armageddon, but as we'll see there are many prominent nations missing from this battle whereas Zechariah 14:2 prophecies that every nation will join the battle on that day. If so, the time frame narrows to sometime between 1948 and the beginning of the Great Tribulation, when no place in the world will be at peace, especially Israel.

Ezekiel prophesied that the Lord would use this battle to turn Israel back to Him and to complete the return of Jews from all over the world to Israel, not leaving any behind. This leads us to believe that the battle of Ezekiel 38-39 is the event that re-starts the clock on the 490-year period of time spoken of by Daniel, the famous 70 weeks of Daniel 9:24-27. 69 of those weeks (483 years) had come when the Messiah was crucified and the Temple destroyed, stopping the clock one week (seven years) short of fulfillment. I believe the dramatic victory the Lord wins over Israel's enemies in Ezekiel's battle will convince them to officially re-instate their Old Covenant relationship and demand a Temple for worship. It's this Temple that's later desecrated by the antichrist, kicking off the Great Tribulation.

With all this in mind, let's begin a careful study of Ezekiel 38-39, to prepare us for these events should they become reality soon.

The word of the LORD came to me: "Son of man, set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal; prophesy against him and say: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: I am against you, O Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal. I will turn you around, put hooks in your jaws and bring you out with your whole army-your horses, your horsemen fully armed, and a great horde with large and small shields, all of them brandishing their swords. Persia, Cush and Put will be with them, all with shields and helmets, also Gomer with all its troops and Beth Togarmah from the far north with all its troops-the many nations with you. (Ezek. 38:1-6)

In a recent article, Finding Gog , I made the claim that Gog is a supernatural figure (perhaps Satan's counterpart to the Archangel Michael) and the behind the scenes commander of this event, while Magog is listed in Genesis 10 as one of Noah's grandsons, a son of Japeth. Over 130 historical references demonstrate that Magog is the father of today's Russian people. (For a more detailed treatment on the modern names of all the nations mentioned in this passage, read the related article I've linked below.)

I've also previously explained that the "hooks in the jaw" phrase describes Russia's reluctance to participate, and that the treaty Russia has with the largely Moslem Central Asian Republics may be invoked to assure that God's will is done and Russia is involved. Persia is the ancient name for Iran, Cush and Put represent the North African nations, Gomer was Magog's brother and settled along the Danube River in what would become Eastern Europe, and Togarmah, a son of Gomer's, inhabited what's now known as Armenia and Turkey. The characteristic all these nations have in common is their religion, they're all Moslem.

"Get ready; be prepared, you and all the hordes gathered about you, and take command of them. After many days you will be called to arms. In future years you will invade a land that has recovered from war, whose people were gathered from many nations to the mountains of Israel, which had long been desolate. They had been brought out from the nations, and now all of them live in safety. You and all your troops and the many nations with you will go up, advancing like a storm; you will be like a cloud covering the land. (Ezek. 38:7-9)

The fact that Israel is the target in this passage is self evident, but a controversy rages around the Heberew word betach translated "in safety" in verse 8. A secondary meaning, "carelessly" could mean that they're not really safe but just think they are and so their guard is down. From outward appearances it looks like it would take a truly miraculous change in Israel's current situation to achieve either of the conditions this word implies.

But recent reports coming from Europe indicate that there's a growing sense of resolve surrounding the deployment of UN troops in Lebanon. Being sponsored by the UN instead of NATO means that neither the US nor Israel will have any real influence over their deployment. And since UN head Kofi Anan has specifically excluded disarming Hezbollah from their mandate the number of troops being committed is growing.

As a practical matter these troops will actually be shielding Hezbollah from any interference by Israel while they re-arm. But since Israeli officials are aggressively pressuring the UN to put them in place so Israeli soldiers can come home, it appears that Israel sees them as the means to ensure peace in the North.

Meanwhile there's talk in Europe of inserting UNIFIL troops into the Gaza area to seperate Israeli troops from Hamas if the Lebanon experiment works. Some are even suggesting that by deploying UNIFIL forces in Iraq, the US departure from there could be hastened.

European leaders like these ideas because it gives them a leg up over the US in accomplishing for the Middle East that the US has been unable to do, and that's establishing a semblance of peace in the region.

To students of prophecy who know that Europe has no love for Israel or the US, it looks like a way to bring a false peace to the region setting Israel up for Ezekiel's battle.

Next time we'll look at the nations that are not involved in this battle and you'll see why it can't be referring to Armageddon. We'll also see how the Lord chooses to reveal Himself to the nations. See you then.

    He said what???

Does he believe that? If yes, then I would ask which believers? When did it begin since it has been nearly 2000 years since Christ left?

Zechariah 14 tells us that Jesus will most definitely be here reigning. Also Isaiah 65:20 says "No longer will there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, Or an old man who does not live out his days; For the youth will die at the age of one hundred And the one who does not reach the age of one hundred Will be thought accursed." That cannot happen after the Great White Throne judgement because EVERY person on the new earth will have glorified, sinless bodies. If there is no sin, how can there be death? So Isaiah must be talking about the 1000 year reign where only those raptured, or resurrected will have glorified bodies. Everyone else will still be in their sinful bodies (only this time, without the help of Satan)

The 1000 yr reign is to finish out the earth's existence before the new earth is created. It will allow those who are left on the earth after the trib to live out their lives and make a final choice before satan is released again to tempt the world. Then the final judgments shall be made. (the White Throne)

IMO, I would not want to be one of the people of that time that are not resurrected. I think they will have less excuse for rejecting God than those who lived before the millennium. They will actually behold the lion lying down with the ox and the fact that animal will not eat animal. Their world of existence will be different than ours. Those who come out of the trib will see the difference, but not those who are born afterward.

Wouldn't it be something if Israel's low elevation affected the flow of oil from surrounding neighbors? Now that I can see them going to war over. I am no expert just thinking out loud.
