Any men here like music by Karen Carpenter? I do! I remember once someone saying it takes a real man to say in public that he listens to The Carpenters lolol.

I cant really call myself a 'fan', but she did have a remarkable voice.
The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.
Day to day pours forth speech, And night to night reveals knowledge.
(Psa 19:1b-2)
I was only 13 when she passed away in 1982.But had older brother and sister's who would have the carpenters playing, wasn't until a little later and saw her movie biography that i thought what a talent she and her brother were. What a lose.My favorite song was close to you.

The Carpenters was considered Make-Out music in high school. Just put on a Carpenters 8-track and your girl friend was ready to smooch.
Never was able to test that theory.
Top of the World!![]()
I remember as a youngster, listening to the 8 track from the back seat, I think "A ticket to ride" was one of my favs. (Yes, I know the beatles did the original), Yesterday once more was a one of my sisters favorites. Can't say I was a fan, but thought Karen sang well.

I grew up between late 70's early 80's.But listend to my brother and sister's albums,Yep albums those round little vynil things."Ancient"
But remember on dates would play the Carpenters.
Captain and Tennile,Linda Ronstandt were good too.
I'd have to say, "Yes!". I love her voice. Always have. Probably always will. I was born in 1966 and Close to You is one of my earliest memories of "pretty music" that caught my ear. But I'm not a panzy. No sir.![]()

I think this was said because The Carpenters were considered "music hall" performers, not concert performers. One step up from lounge singers. Which even today is a great target for jokes on performers.
My husgand and I were high school sweethearts in the 70's and 80's... he had an 8-track tape deck in his car (I still can't listen to some oldies without expected the track to switch in the middle of the song)...and The Carpenters were one of our favorites when we were in a mellow mood. We didn't "make out" as someone mentioned (we lived in small town and everybody knew what everybody did---so that was no-no) but we used to sit down at the beach with a portable player or would sit on the hood of the car.
Wow... that brought back some great memories....![]()
YES! Big fan.![]()
When I hear about the Carpenters I think about the scene in Tommy Boy where a song comes on, they both act like they don't like it, "I can take it if you can." Then the next scene they are both singing.
I am not a big Carpenter fan but I don't diss them.
I still like hearing her.
Nowadays I'm more into Sarah Brightman.
I remember her and a few other names, though I really just loved the easy listening stuff and never paid a lot of attention to who was singing. I also great up in the late '70s and early '80s, Class of '87 ofr high school.
I remember being so excited because barry manilow was coming to down in the mid-'80s and going to a concert with my mom. (Now you've *really* got to be a man to admit that - or at least you had to be in high school)
Anyway, I don't know if I could make a list of favorites, but i really did like the Carpenters. nice thing is, my friends back then accepted that, even the ones who liked harder stuff, though once we got to college and they got influenced by others, the ones who liked heavier stuff tended to gravitate away from me.I think more guys than we thought liked the softer stuff back then, at least in N.E.Ohio where I was.
John 3:16 (KJV) For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life.
Never heard of her. Is is some type of Hanna Montana style rock music?
I've kept quiet long enough . . . ban me from the Men's room if you will, but Karen had a voice (when the songs were in her range - she recorded other songs that have never been published because the were not "flawless" due to the fact that they were out of her range vocally) that spoke to millions (me included!)
And, anyone attending a live concert got exactly what had been "played" on the radio. (How many concerts I've gone to where the artist went off into wild convolutions of a song . . . or repeating the "chorus" over and over again . . not what I had "listened" to on their album or on the radio!)
Here is a story of a drummer (Yes, Karen was originally the drummer for the Carpenters) who was pushed out into the spotlight (I reserve judgment on her brother for "forcing" her into the spotlight - that's a whole other story) and graced us with her incredible voice.
One of her songs, I feel, really talked about how she felt, and to this day is my favorite song of hers:
I Need to be in Love - I just hope she found True Love in Jesus Christ before she died - the only Free Gift in the Universe:
I Need to Be in Love Lyrics
The hardest thing I've ever done Is keep believing
There's someone in this crazy world For me
The way that people come and go Thru temporary lives
My chance could come and I might never know
I used to say "no promises, Let's keep it simple"
But freedom only helps you say Good-bye
It took a while for me to learn That nothin' comes for free
The price I've paid is high enough for me
I know I need to be in love
I know I've wasted too much time
I know I ask perfection of
A quite imperfect world
And fool enough to think that's
What I'll find
So here I am with pockets full Of good intentions
But none of them will comfort me Tonight
I'm wide awake at four a.m. Without a friend in sight
Hanging on a hope but I'm alright
I know I need to be in love
I know I've wasted too much time
I know I ask perfection of
A quite imperfect world
And fool enough to think that's
What I'll find
The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.
He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh:
