Just curious, does anyone here have a CCW permit? Talk to me about what you carry, why, and how you discovered what works for you.

I was mugged and nearly killed 12 years ago, and all my guns were lock up safely. I have always been an avid shooter, and competed in the early days of IPSC. When Kansas finally allowed lawful concealed carry, I began carrying 24-7.

What work for me is Springfield Armory XD Compact in .45 ACP in a Blade Tech IWB holster and a Wilderness Instructors belt. It will conceal under a t-shirt, and 10 rounds of .45! For light carry I have a Kahr PM9 in a Blade Tech IWB that you forget is there, and a Kel-tec .32 auto for when I hope I never need it.

The odd thing is I am a devited 1911 .45 auto fan, but these moderd designs, especially the Springfield XD are excellent carry guns.

Well I'm not a male but I do have my conceil carry permit for Texas. I havent had to use it, nor do I carry it all the time. The main purpose was to keep it in my car. I have a Bersa 380 semi auto. We also have a Smith and Wesson MP 15 and a .22 for target practice. Dh and I are looking to add a Sig 40 cal. We like guns

Got a Springfield 1911 G.I. .45 , but I was wanting something for conceiled carry.The Para Warthog .45 has 10 rd. cap.,but I also like the Kimber Pro TLE .45 with 4 in. barrel.Some .45 acp come with Hi-capacity 14 Rnds.,but I'm leary of the aluminum frame on those.The caddilac I'm coveting the most is the Kimber Grand Raptor II,but it's only standard 7 Rnds. and for display mostly.

My permit is for Pennslyvania. I was threatened years ago, I had responsibilities over cash and personnel information, and I hunted with a handgun as well, so I got the permit. I do not always carry but it is normally a 1911a1 Springfield or a .22 Mag Rossi. Hollowpoints and FMJ mix. I carry in computer bag or vehicle and rarely an inside-the-pant clip-on holster. I have found if I really have a security issue a 12 gauge slug gun or Mini-14 is best.

I hope to get a Kimber 1911 or a .357 Sig.

I guess what and how you carry depends on your threat level, and escape plan. If you plan to get out of Dodge, lots of rounds, if survival and close quarters are primary, accuracy + stopping power.

If you can, take training courses and PRACTICE ALOT.

Kimber 1911's are fine pistols. I have a Kimber Custom that is an accurate pistol. I put an Ed Brown bbl. in it and with my reloads it will shoot into an inch @ 50ft. I like it too much to carry though. I would hate for it to get dinged up.

I have a CCW permit for Pennsylvania, but to date, I have never used it. I got it because after I moved here from the Socialist-Democratic Republic of Maryland, I felt so liberated to actually be able to finally have my right to keep and BEAR arms uninfringed, that I went and got it.

Strangely though as a teen hunter in MD, I found it was legal to hunt deer in MD with an AR-15. Another quirk was if you shot someone with a .44 magnum even in self defence, they could charge you with murder in that the gun was so powerful you "intended" to kill them.

However if you wanted to hunt deer with a handgun, only a .44 was considered powerful enough.

I could see it now:

Armed intruder response.... dang this'l haers ma .44 redhawk for huntin', whait a sec and I'll blow you away with ma' shotgun.

I carry a CZ-40B. It is a bit large, but so am I. It is a .40 S&W. CZ no longer makes this gun, if I'm not mistaken. It is basically a CZ-75 slide on a 1911-style frame. I can carry it cocked and locked or double-action first shot. I have had a CCW since 1989. I think I have a CCW because my mom was murdered in front of me when I was three. I have always felt uncomfortable NOT having a gun around. I use a Norinco 12-gauge riot gun for home defense. I keep it loaded with 00 buck.

I have not carried my Kahr PM9 in the four years I have had the CCW permit. But the Kahr is the smallest 9mm with the best balance available, and it fits in your pocket with 6-7 rounds.

My son, now 37 years old, was in the second graduating CCW class ever in MN. He has a Kal-tec 9mm that is a great little pistol for the money. He also packs a 10mm in the car when he travels. He just bought a Bersa 380 for his wife who works in Dtn Mpls.

That little Bersa is the most accurate pistol I have taken to the range--beautiful piece! She wasn't too excited at first; but now, because of increased problems downtown, is enthusiastically enrolling in a class.

I spent the money and the time to get my CCW permit just because I think it's a right we need to protect. In Israel, I'm told there are more concealed weapons per capita than anywhere in the world, with a crime rate that is the lowest (murders, rapes, burglary, etc.--not rockets from Gaza).

We need to protect our right to bear arms, even if, like me, we don't actually carry.

New Mexico just went to CCW but has the best of both worlds as they also allow carry open and notorious. BTW, if you are caught carrying a hidden weapon, it is a petty misdemeanor with a $50 fine. I haven't gotten my CCW permit and probably won't. I carry in my vehicle at all times and also have a separate weapon in the drawer of my office. I prefer Ruger and have two 9 mm along with a Sig Sauer 40 mm, a Ruger 45 cal. 6 gun to be carried with a western shooting rig and a 380 Tomcat (my "girlie" gun). However, it is small and discrete and its seven round clip is good for work at short range. Other weapons include multiple 12 guage shotguns (Beretta for home defense) and rifles designed for long range hunting. My son (age 13) has his own guns (junior versions) with a 20 guage shotgun and a 30-30 Winchester Model 94 pre-1964 which has been in the family for over 50 years. I believe in home defense first and asking questions later. The Second Amendment protects the heart and soul of our country and any attempt to remove that protection will be met with appropriate response. I believe that you should never be more than 5 feet from a weapon at any time and I try to practice that. I am disabled and unable to effectively protect myself or my family anymore by relying upon pure physical abilities. Therefore, it is extremely important that my weapons remain loaded and ready for any contingency at any time. If I sound like a redneck, I am and proud of it. I am an educated redneck attorney who is well aware of my Constitutional rights and my duty to God and country. Enough said.

Wyatt - good post, it is not only ore 2nd ammendment rights that are in danger, but most of the others in the bill of rights as well. I think it is sad that in the United States we should even think about having to "protect" ourselves. A good friend of mine is a local police officer, and when CCW first came to Kansas, he told me to go get one & carry all the time, as the job of the police is primarily response AFTER the fact, and by then it is too late. I agree, as I am never out of reach of a weapon. The assult I endured 12 years ago taught me a hard lesson. If you are not ready, you could die.

Even with the best training and equipment you have to rely on the Lord. And I hope each one of us who posesses a permit, is prepared to laydown our lives just as quickly if not quicker that to take one. I pray I never have to use my gun but instead look for opportunities to use the "Sword" with grace and mercy.

I know an evangelist who has a ccw signed by Jesus. He carries his weapon boldly in the open and has no fear of even the darkest place. Now that is Security!

In the winter I carry a Kimber TLE five inch barrel stainless and in the summer I carry a Kel-tec P-11, the smallest 10 round 9mm. Sometimes I carry a S&W 86, Taurus 24/7 in 9mm, and if I am wearing shorts I carry a Kel-tec 380.

I'm glad I stumbled across this thread. It made me stop and re-inventory. So this afternoon my son and I went out to the gun room and spent some time going through everything. I had forgotten about a Para-Ordinance .45, a Ruger .22, an AK-47 assault rifle and multiple other weapons. The Para-Ordinance is a beautiful weapon with walnut grips and stainless barrel. It is also pre-ban and I bought it from a police officer so it doesn't have the limited capacity magazines. I really need to do some reloading though so perhaps I can turn to that later this fall. Unfortunately, the police are there to pick up the pieces after the crime has already occurred. Therefore, it is the duty of every citizen to provide for their own self-defense. It's too bad that many shirk that duty.

I agree Wyatt, an armed society is a polite society...sad but true. I am in the process of building an AK from a Romanian kit. Next weekend I will put the finish on it, and the following weekend after the finish has occured will test it. It will be fun!
