The Savage Earth: Earthquakes and Volcanos

    http://www.pbs.org/wnet/savageearth/

If you imagine the Earth as a giant bell, it's ringing with earthquakes every second of the day -- from the many imperceptible clinks of microquakes to the deafening gong of very occasional but "great" earthquakes (those of magnitude 8.0 or greater). The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that several million temblors, most undetectable, happen every day.

All volcanoes are born when hot magma rises to the surface, infiltrates a weak spot in the Earth's outer crust, and breaks through. Most of the 600-plus active volcanoes on Earth are associated with the boundaries of the tectonic plates, the seven great plates that carry the oceans and continents. They are especially common in subduction zones, which occur when one plate dips beneath another. As the plate dives into the mantle -- the layer of hot, flexible rock on which the plates glide -- it gradually is heated. That releases fluids which heat the overlying rock, producing blobs of molten rock that rise to the surface. The molten rock -- or magma -- collects in weak patches of crust, in structures called magma chambers. If the pressure in the magma chamber builds high enough, the magma will erupt. A volcano is born

If you think of a freshman geology textbook, there is always a picture of a volcano with a magma chamber, large compared to the volcano. I think that most people walk away from that with the sense that these magma chambers exist for millennia and that -- for some reason never quite spelled out -- once in a while they burp out a bit of magma, which becomes lava when it comes to the surface," says Nye. "But in fact things are happening much more quickly than that, on time scales of days or weeks for magma to move from a magma chamber and then up to the surface to erupt

    Mayon Volcano, Philippines
There are signs of unrest at Mayon Volcano in the Philippines after an increase in summit crater glow has been observed. This is caused by a rise in magma levels at the volcano. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has also recorded an inflation of the volcano. Alert level one is maintained at Mayon volcano and residents and tourists are advised not to enter the 7 km radius extended danger zone.

    Chaitén Volcano, Chile
Eruptive activity continues at Chaiten volcano in Chile. Over the past week there has been a decrease in earthquake number and magnitude, with 17 earthquakes recorded per day. Ash emissions rise 1.5 km above the summit. A lava dome continues to grow in the summit crater, which may collapse generating ash and block flows in the adjacent valleys. Dome growth is mostly in the western side of the caldera. Adjacent valleys contain ash deposits which may mobilise in heavy rains, causing lahars. Chaiten volcano remains on alert level RED.

Default Mysterious Tremors Detected on San Andreas Fault

    http://www.breitbart.com/article.php...show_article=1

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Scientists have detected a spike in underground rumblings on a section of California's San Andreas Fault that produced a magnitude-7.8 earthquake in 1857.

What these mysterious vibrations say about future earthquakes is far from certain. But some think the deep tremors suggest underground stress may be building up faster than expected and may indicate an increased risk of a major temblor.
    Proverbs 3:5,6
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths.

(07-09) 17:30 PDT -- Swarms of small tremors deep beneath the ground after two recent quakes in Monterey County may be adding stress to a seismically locked segment of the San Andreas fault and could presage a major earthquake, two Berkeley scientists suggest.

That rise in activity, say Robert Nadeau and Aurélie Guilhem of the UC Berkeley Seismological Laboratory, indicates that stress is increasing inside the San Andreas at Cholame, 45 miles southeast of the epicenter of the 1857 Fort Tejon quake at Morgan Peak. The temblor, one of the greatest earthquakes in California history, caused little damage because the region was virtually uninhabited at the time, but the fault has generated no significant movement since then and is considered locked for 185 miles to the south.

Cholame stands just at the northern end of that locked segment of the San Andreas, and the swarm of tremors shuddering faintly beneath the community is continuing today, well after the earthquakes struck only a few miles to the northwest.

Nadeau and Guilhem reported on those tremors and their possible significance today in the journal Science. Nadeau said that increased tremor activity has also been seen in other active fault zones around the world - with the same possible significance.

Does Al Gore know about this? He may need to come up with a way to tax those countries that have all these volcanos spewing stuff into the air and the earthquakes that cause it. Maybe make the countries pour some concrete down those volcanoes and seal them off.

Do the 3-5 AM siesmic waves in Yellowstone and Utah reflect the earthquake in New Zeland?

It appears to my untrained eye that the source of the harmonic tremors that have been showing up on a lot of the Yellowstone seismographs are of local origin. There are two groups of harmonic tremors starting about 3:15 and ending around 5:15. There is about a 1/2 hour seperation between them.

Does anyone know if that time coincides with the New Zealand quake and the first aftershock? If so there well could be a connection and I could be wrong about it being local in origin.

Anyway, here is the seismo of the Flagg Ranch seismo and a link to the seismo page.
