What would you do if the cities in your country were leveled by missiles or enemy bombers?

How would you react if an earthquake cut off all communication water and electrical sources?

What would you do if a group of terrorists held you hostage?

The need for turning to God has ever been more urgent!

In the United States, we have experience very little sacrifice and suffering in comparison to Christians in other nations. For most of us, any persecution that may have undergone has been minor.

Christianity has been popularized. Christian bookstores sell thousands of Christian books. Well-known people openly profess their Christian belief. However, I believe that the popularity will end as secular materialism becomes increasingly prevalent in our educational system. Already we have experienced the curtailment of prayer and Bible study in our schools, and our young people are paying the price. Christ warned His followers that to believe in Him would not make them popular and that they should be prepared to face affliction for His sake. Anti-abortion supporters have been jailed or mistreated. Parents who have opposed objectionable material in our school classrooms have been called extremists, or worse.

But can these difficulties be compared with the persecutions in countries where Christians not only have been jailed but also tortured or killed?

The Bible says that all who want "to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted."

The fact that we are not being persecuted for Christ's sake is an abnormal situation.

Are we so used to the luxuries of freedom that we would be unable to stand up to persecution?

Most of us would do no more, no less, than we are doing right now. Some of us who wear our Christianity on our sleeves probably would be the first to surrender. Many others would like the Apostle Peter who declared, "Though all other deny Christ, yet I will never deny him. But he did. Three times. Still others, having stored up resources of strength and power, would be strong and courageous and would say, as the Apostle Paul did, "My power is made perfect in weakness."

    Our Spiritual Survival Kit

If we want to have resources in our possession for a day of disaster, we need to have a spiritual survival kit: God's storehouse of supplies for us.

But we must meet some requirements before we can receive the abundance:

First, we need to make sure of our relationship to God.

We must be prepared to meet God at any moment.

Isn't it strange how we prepare for so many things except meeting God?

Getting to know God and being able to call on Him is the first step in storing up for the storms.

Getting to know God is more than treating Him as a casual acquaintance - its developing a deeper relationship with Him every day.

Second, we need to learn how to walk with God in our daily lives.

Have you ever been asked, "How is your walk?"

Some Christians will know immediately that you are asking about their walk with God, but others may say, "Well, I do about two miles a day."

I know people who seem to be holding the hand of God throughout life's journey. I also know people who are lagging far behind.

In the Old Testament there are vivid examples of people who walked with God. Abraham walked with God and was called a friend of God. Noah walked with God , and when the Flood came, Noah was saved. Moses walked with God, and when the hour of judgement fell upon Egypt, Moses led his people to victory Daniel walked with God, and he was saved from the lions' den.

God does not always pull His children out of deep water. Peter was crucified upside down; Andrew was tied to a cross for three days before he died; John was a prisoner on a desolate island; Bartholomew was beaten; Thomas was murdered. These men walked with God,. And today we too have access to that same strength that the apostles did.

Third, we need to read and memorize Scripture.

We have heard many stories about Christians who, while in prison camps, had no Bibles but who had portions of Scripture committed to memory. One Christian in a prison camp for three years said that during his imprisonment, his greatest regret was not having memorized more of the Bible. People have told me that in their suffering, they sometimes could only remember small parts of Scripture.

Several years ago my wife, Ruth, had a terrible fall. She suffered a concussion and was unconscious for nearly a week. When she regained consciousness, she had lost a great deal of her memory. Most disturbing to her was the bible verses she had learned throughout the years. The Bible verses of a lifetime were more precious to her than any of her material possessions. One night, when she was praying., she said, "Lord God, take anything that I have, but please bring back my Bible verses." Immediately this verse came to her mind: "I have loved thee with and everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness, have I drawn thee." She did not remember having memorized that verse, but God brought it back to her.

She has continued to memorize, and one of those passages is Romans 8:31-39. I urge you too to memorize it and hide it away in your heart. When persecution, trouble and adversity arise, these verses will give you hope and strength.

What a great storehouse we will have when those thoughts are in our hearts!

What verses have you stored up for the future?

Fourth, we need to make prayer our priority.

We live in a materialistic world, but it seems as if we pray only during a crisis, and then between crises we neglect to pray.

But we have so many battles going on that we should be a people of prayer!

Our government needs our prayers. Our leaders need our prayers. Our schools need our prayers. Our youth need our prayers. Our families need our prayers.

Are we prepared spiritually as individuals, as a nation, for the increasing attacks upon us?

We have "spiritual forces of evil" at work in our world. Depravity seems to be increasing every year. We need to be in prayer against those "powers of darkness."

In the Bible is an account of prayer being used as a weapon against a wicked ruler. Sennacherib, an Assyrian leader, had boasted that he would defeat God's people and would take over their land. His propaganda machine was powerful. He sent messages to Israel, taunting the people about their weakness and boasting of his strength. In the arms race of their day, the Assyrians were definitely ahead. But Israel's king, Hezekiah, was a man of faith. He knew that on a purely human level the Assyrians could destroy Israel. But Hezekiah had a secret weapon. He fell on his knees in prayer. Look what happened: "The Lord sent an angel who annihilated all the fighting men and the leaders and officers in the camp of the Assyrian king. Sennacherib withdrew to his own land in disgrace. The Lord saved Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem….He took care of them on every side."

Miracles have happened when God's people have turned to Him in prayer.

God does not always deliver us out of catastrophe, but He promises to be with us throughout.

    God's Storehouse for Us

Even after many years of severe restrictions, the Church in China has survived.

How can this be? Because of small groups of believers who, though often driven "underground," have managed to meet regularly with the Word.

Despite the concerted effort to destroy all the Bibles in China, some copies survived. The small groups of Christians meet around the Word and are nurtured by the Bible and by verses that believers have memorized.

Even in prisons and labor camps Chinese Christians have let the flame of their faith burn brightly, and they have been used to lead other Chinese to Jesus Christ.

And consequently, even under persecution, the number of Christians has multiplied.

    What about us?

Are we preparing for the storms of suffering?

Or will we be caught without resources?

The best way to prepare is to deepen our spiritual lives, to deepen our life in the Holy Spirit.

Being filled with the Holy Spirit is an ongoing experience. When Paul wrote, "Be filled with the spirit," he conveyed the idea that we keep on being filled with the Spirit, like and ever-flowing spring. We have God's storehouses available to us at all times. When the resources are needed, they are there for us.

    So be prepared.

When the "day of evil" comes, we will not be controlled by the circumstance around us; rather, we will depend on the resources of God.

Actually things are slowing down in Baja. the quake/aftershock count right after the big one was over three hundred a day. The latest count from my posting in amother thread was dfown to 39. And it has been steadily falling a little each day. And todays count, when I have time to post the daily update, will be only 34.

Iceland volcano ash disrupts European flights
Flights canceled and all London airports set to close, operator says

LONDON - Ash clouds drifting from Iceland's erupting volcano disrupted air traffic across Northern Europe Thursday, forcing airports to close and the cancelation of hundreds of flights in Britain, Ireland and the Nordic countries.

In Iceland, hundreds have fled from floodwaters rising since the volcano under the Eyjafjallajokull glacier erupted Wednesday for the second time in less than a month. As water gushed down the mountainside, rivers had risen by up to 10 feet by Wednesday night.

The volcano was sending up smoke and ash that posed "a significant safety threat to aircraft," Britain's National Air Traffic Service said, as visibility is compromised and debris can get sucked into airplane engines.

Airports at Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle and Manchester in the U.K. were also affected, along with others in Scandinavia.

"Due to ash, air traffic on the sea area between Scotland, Norway, northern Sweden, Britain, Norway and northern Finland is being limited," Finland's airport agency Finavia said.

    Are we having more earthquakes?
It sure seems like it. Since the beginning of 2010, there have been four major earthquakes around the world.

    1.7.0 in Haiti on January 12, 2010.
    2.8.8 in Chile on February 27, 2010.
    3.7.2 in Mexico on April 4, 2010.
    4.6.9 in China on April 13, 2010.
All of this seismic activity has left some wondering if earthquakes are increasing in frequency, or if it just seems like they are. According to an expert from the United States Geological Survey, the recent activity is not unusual.

Geophysicist Dale Grant spoke with CNN and remarked that while it may seem like quakes are getting more frequent, the numbers are about average, historically speaking. What has changed? The quakes are striking more populated areas, which has led to more damage, more deaths, and, as a consequence, far more news coverage. It might seem like we're getting a lot more earthquakes, but they're actually just causing more damage due to where they are striking.

I wonder how this one compares to the 1991 eruption of Mt. Pinatubo. That one also sent a lot of ash into the upper atmosphere and disrupted plane flights. On the plus side, we had some very beautiful sunsets for a couple of years after it went off. But we also had some cooler summers too.

large volcanic eruption can not only affect the local area
    but the world
    example
    Year Without a Summer
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
    Jump to: navigation, search

1816 Summer temperature anomaly with respect to 1971-2000 climatology. The Year Without a Summer (also known as the Poverty Year, Year There Was No Summer and Eighteen Hundred and Froze to Death[1]) was 1816, in which severe summer climate abnormalities destroyed crops in Northern Europe, the Northeastern United States and eastern Canada.[2][3] Average global temperatures decreased about 0.4–0.7 °C (0.7–1.3 °F),[4] enough to cause significant agricultural problems around the globe.

Most consider the climate anomaly to have been caused by a combination of a historic low in solar activity with a volcanic winter event; the latter caused by a succession of major volcanic eruptions capped off by the Mount Tambora eruption of 1815, the largest known eruption in over 1,600 years.

It is now generally thought that the aberrations occurred because of the 1815 (April 5–15) volcanic Mount Tambora eruption[13][14] on the island of Sumbawa, Indonesia (then part of the Dutch East Indies). The eruption had a Volcanic Explosivity Index ranking of 7, a super-colossal event that ejected immense amounts of volcanic dust into the upper atmosphere. It was the world's largest eruption since the Hatepe eruption over 1,630 years earlier in 180 AD. The fact that the 1815 eruption occurred during the middle of the Dalton Minimum (a period of unusually low solar activity) is also significant.

Other large volcanic eruptions (with VEI at least 4) during the same time frame are:

1812, La Soufrière on Saint Vincent in the Caribbean
1812, Awu on Sangihe Islands, Indonesia
1813, Suwanosejima on Ryukyu Islands, Japan
    1814, Mayon in the Philippines
These other eruptions had already built up a substantial amount of atmospheric dust. As is common following a massive volcanic eruption, temperatures fell worldwide because less sunlight passed through the atmosphere.

understand? ash/dust stays aloft in the atmosphere and blocks sunlight
among other things and it can affect the entire world if the eruption is big enough

    Eyjafjallajokull volcano, Iceland
Ashfall is occurring in Iceland from the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull volcano. Between midnight and 4:30 am today volcanic lightning was recorded 22 times, and earthquakes were measured between magnitude 1.2 and 2.3. The eruption continued with force last night, with the ash reaching an altitude of 8.5 km. Heavy ashfall is occurring at the base of Eyjafjallajokull glacier.

    Aviation hazards from volcanic ash
The grounding of 17,000 flights from the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland highlights the hazard of volcanoes to aircraft. The total closure of British airspace is unprecedented. Since 1980 about 5 airports per year have been affected by eruptions. The largest number of closures have occurred at Catania (Sicily), Anchorage (Alaska), Quito (Ecuador), and Tokua (Papua New Guinea). About 20% of the airports closed were more than 500 km from the volcano. Since 1973 there have been at least 100 incidents involving aircraft and volcanic ash emissions. In 1982 an aircraft flying over Galunggung volcano in Indonesia lost power from all four engines, and descended 12,000 ft before the engines were restarted. In 1989 an aircraft flying over Redoubt volcano in Alaska encountered volcanic ash, damaging engines, which required replacing. The current situation in Europe will need to be analysed to determine if the widespread airport closures were an overraction, or justified based on volcanic activity. Caution is always advised when it comes to volcanic activity, but what will be the response next time this type of event occurs? The last eruption of Eyjafjallajokull volcano lasted for more than a year, so there is a possibility that more ash emissions will occur.

    Eyjafjallajokull volcano, Iceland
A significant eruption is continuing at Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland. Ash emissions are reaching 28,000 ft altitude. Yesterday there was a glacial outburst, and water level in Markarfljót rose by 50 centimeters at 6pm. There was another glacial outburst earlier in the day at Gígjökull glacial tongue. More glacial bursts are expected as the eruption continues. Roads are closed near Fljótsdalur, the old Markarfljót bridge on highway number 1, and near the villages of Vík and Kirkjubaejarklaustur. The road between Vík and Kirkjubaejarklaustur was opened at 4 pm yesterday but remains closed by Hvolsvöllur and Skógar.

    Eyjafjallajokull volcano, Iceland
Glacial flood from the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland has caused damage to infrastructure. A 400m section national highway number 1 to the east of Markarfljót bridge and sections of the road east of Seljalandsá river have been washed away. National route 1 is closed from Thverá to Thorvaldseyri. The road close to Bleiksá river, in the Fljótshlíd district, is impassable in places. Volcanic ash is expected to continue falling south of the glacier overnight. There is a risk that Katla volcano nearby may also erupt. If Katla erupts, the effects of glacial floods could be one hundred times worse than that seen this week at Eyjafjallajokull volcano.

    Eyjafjallajokull volcano, Iceland
Ash emissions are continuing from Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland. Winds are blowing the ash over Europe, causing flights to remain grounded. All flights to and from Britain have been cancelled until at least 7pm today. Ashfall has been reported in Britain. Five million travelers are stranded, waiting for flights to resume. Some may be waiting for more than a week to find available seats. If flight disruptions continue into this week there will be a shortage of some food products in Britain, which normally come in by air from east Asia and Africa. The grounding of flights has already cost the British economy about £1 billion, with £230m losses for every day of further disruption. The initial eruption of Eyjafjallajokull volcano last month was basalt, while the new eruption under the glacier last week involved andesite.

Rare Yellowstone volcano eruption would be deadly
    (AFP) – 2 days ago

WASHINGTON — As ash from an Iceland volcano snarled air travel across Europe, experts said an eruption of the 'supervolcano' at the Yellowstone national park would be deadly, though it is unlikely any time soon.

"The next major eruption for Yellowstone, if you have a guess, is probably thousands of years in the future," Bill Burton, a vulcanologist with the US Geological Survey, told AFP.

The volcano, dubbed a 'supervolcano' because of its enormous strength, has not erupted for hundreds of thousands of years.

It last erupted some 640,000 years ago, and the two prior eruptions were 1.3 million and 2.1 million years ago.
Experts will examine a volcano's history of eruptions, but also use surveillance techniques and technology including GPS to detect whether the volcano is "swelling" because of pressure created by magma.

"If the seismicity and the GPS start showing signs of magma moving then its time to think about gas coming out," Burton said. "So we keep track of all of those things and the more data... you have, the better."

An eruption at Yellowstone, though unlikely in the near future, would have devastating consequences, Burton said.

"The impact would be severe," and would likely send large quantities of volcanic material into the atmosphere.

Yellowstone's last eruption, some 640,000 years ago, sent an estimated 1,000 cubic kilometers of ash and volcanic rock over the American west and parts of the Midwest, spreading as far south as Mexico.

The eruption was some 3,000 times stronger than that at Mount Vesuvius in the year 79, and around 1,000 times stronger than the 1980 eruption of Mount Saint Helens in the US northwest.

A similarly violent eruption at Yellowstone could decimate the population, producing "crop failure (and) water contaminations," Burton said.

The biggest volcanic eruption in the last two centuries, the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora on the Indonesian island of Sumbawa, sent 160 cubic kilometers of volcanic debris into the atmosphere and caused an overall drop in global temperatures for the year -- a "year without a summer," Burton said.

The disaster also killed at least 71,000 people.

The eruption of the Toba volcano in Sumatra some 73,000 years ago, an event 1,000 times more powerful than the 1980 Mount St Helens eruption, may even have wiped out most of the human race, according to a theory based on fossil evidence

    Eyjafjallajokull volcano, Iceland
More than 63,000 flights have been cancelled due to the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland. Ash is approaching the coast of Canada near Newfoundland, and is expected to reach the coast at about 1 pm. Eruptions are continuing at the volcano.

Eyjafjallajokull volcano is located in southern Iceland under Eyjafjallajökull icecap. The southern end of the volcano was once part of the Atlantic coastline. The sea level has retreated some 5 km, leaving behind sheer cliffs with and many waterfalls such as Skógafoss.

Eyjafjallajokull volcano contains a 2.5 km wide caldera.

Eyjafjöll has been much less active than neighboring volcanoes. Since 1600's there have only been three eruptions at Eyjafjoll, while nearby Katla had 20 eruptions.

The 2010 eruption site has been named Fimmvörðuháls.
