In my humble opinion one does not allow the gas tank to drop below 1/4. Especially in the winter! Just listen to gramma Kem, stay safe.

It depends on what country you are in.
In the US, customers like forgiveness, you usually have a spare gallon or two after the meter has ran out. In Germany, the customer likes to know exactly how much they have. So they do not have that extra two gallons to run on. I assume the low fuel light differs on the fuel capacity of the vehicle. For instance, it had BETTER be different on a semi versus a Geo metro.

Allowing the tank to run low often,
puts undue stress on the fuel pump which is the reason fuel pump failure is a very common and expensive occurrence. Actually aside from the initial fill-up, it's costs the same to keep your tank full as it does to keep throwing 20 bucks in when it's low :P

My car (toyota solara) says it has 20 miles left when the ugly fuel light shows up, never tested it though beyond 5 miles!

And the condensation can actually freeze up the carburetor. At least I think that's what happened to my son's car one winter. We had to hang a trouble light under the hood for an hour or so and then were able to start it using some spray starter stuff.

In my younger days, I did run out of fuel occasionally. The time I had the 10 mile walk, it was in the summer and it was lovely weather. My Triumph Spitfire had a small tank...

![]() LOL! Check out the link! Kind of interesting... When we got our van, hubby was a parking lot when the light turned on and it ran out of gas driving to the gas station in the same lot! ![]() Our old Saturn would run forever after the light came on (although I did run out of fuel right by a gas station once, LOL!)
